Additional Research & Sources |
During the war, Cobbs enlisted with the One Hundred and Twenty-Sixth Illnois Volunteer Infantry. After serving two years, Cobbs was Point Lookout due to his bad eyesight. There, he became commissary of war prisoners. After the war, Cobbs returned home to Tipton, Iowa and found work in the dry goods businesss, who he later turned over to his sons when he retired. In January 1868, Cobbs married Eliza V. Boynton of Ohio and together, they had four children (F.B., Brett, Gertrude and Charles). A "grip box" was another term for a foot locker used by soldiers to store their belongings such as clothing, journals, letters from home and other items. Handles made the storage easy to carry and the box could be strapped onto trucks using ropes or leather straps. |
