Additional Research & Sources |
On December 21, 1837, Linn County was established in the area previously known as the "Wisconsin Territory", as Iowa boundary lines had not yet been throughly formed. The county was named after Dr. Louis F. Linn, a senator from Missouri, with the spelling as "Lynn". The county was largely composed of the previous Dubuque county, which in 1837, had been divided into 14 new, smaller counties. The first settler of the county was John Mann, who built a home on the Upper Big Creek in Linn Grove in 1838. He had travelled from Pennslyvania to the new land and made a living by building and operating a small flouring mill. The first town site was that of Westport (now Bertram) in July of 1838. The town was soon abadoned for a site built by William Stone in September 1838 called Columbus (now Cedar Rapids). The county soon expanded with new townships across the area, including Marion, Franklin, Washington, Fayette, Putnam and Brown in 1841, Linn and Rapids in 1843, Otter Creek in 1844, Buffalo and Maine in 1848, Monroe in 1849, Spring Grove in 1853, Clinton in 1854, Jackson in 1855, College, Bertam, Fairfax and Boulder in 1858, Grant in 1872 and Cedar in 1906. |
