Additional Research & Sources |
While being held in an Alabama prison after being captured at the Battle of Shiloh, Sunderlin became friends with a young man, John Ewell, who had no family. When an exchange of prisoners took place, Sunderlin told Ewell to take his name when it was called, sacrificing his own freedom for his friend. Sunderlin spent several more months in the prison where his health deteriorated. When he returned home, he was proclaimed a hero by the Mount Vernon residents. On May 19, 1913, Sunderlin passed away from injuries after falling from a hay loft the night before. |
