Description |
This photograph shows the High Point Methodist Episcopal Church as it appeared around 1912. This rural church was constructed in Ringgold County in 1874, and it was located about one mile east of the future site of the small community of Blackmore, Iowa. The church was built using mostly volunteer labor and donated materials. The church remained open for several decades, and closed in 1950. Content can be used with the following standards: 3rd grade SS 3.28 Cultural Contributions in a lesson on the development of Iowans towns during the early 1900s. Additional Research & Sources |
Before the construction of the church in the fall of 1874, the residents of the Liberty Township held church services in the Prarie View Schoolhouse. When the church was built on the land of James A. Drake, it became one of the earliest wood-frame churches in the county. To add to the landscape surrounding the church, the townspeople donated trees, such as a large oak tree donated by widow Calfee. Large boulders and limestone were brought in to build the foundation, as well as supplies such as lumber, flooring, rafters, windows, doors, nails and paint from the nearby town of Leon. Due to contributions of the congregation to help build the church, when it opened a year later under Elder Todd, it was debt-free. |
