This photograph shows the Catholic Church (St. Josephs Catholic Church) in Mount Ayr, Iowa, as it appeared around 1986. A Protestant group, the Christian Congregation, constructed the church in 1883 and later sold it to the Roman Catholic Church in 1913. The Roman Catholics used the building until 1992. Content can be used with the following standards: 3rd grade SS 3.28 Cultural Contributions in a lesson on town expansion in the early 1900s. After the purchase of the building earlier in the year, the St. Joseph Catholic Church was dedicated in December of 1914. The church became the only Catholic church in the town of Mount Ayr. In 1991, it was approved to construct a new church building and as of 2012, the church led around 45 families each week in service. |
