This painting shows how Muscatine may have appeared in 1919. The two men in the small boat are clammers, and they are using a crowfoot bar to harvest mussels for a pearl button factory. Clamming was the method of collecting mussles to later be cut and was completed by workers known as clammers. The painting demostrates the method of using a crowfoot bar, with ropes and hooks to grab mussels whose instinct was to snap down on the hook when feeling threatened. |
