Description |
This is a brown stitched paper sandbags used in German trench warfare during the First World War. These coverings would once have been filled with a variety of sand, clay, dirt, rubble, and other materials to provide a buffer against enemy infantry attacks or artillery barrages. Most often, sandbags lined the walls of trenches and dugouts to absorb the shock of bullets, grenades, and artillery shells, thus preserving the trench's structural integrity.
