Additional Research & Sources |
The Chautauqua Circuit was an educational program developed in the early 1900s where professionals would travel to educate audiences on varying subjects and matters. One section of the lectures included nurses teaching about public health. In cooperation with the Red Cross, nurses who had served overseas were often selected as speakers as their experience excited the audience and held their interest. After sharing stories of their experience, nurses would then transition into a public health discussion. Pirie-Beyea was one of the nurses chosen to participate in the circuit. Originally from Cedar Rapids, Pirie-Beyea served as a nurse in Europe from 1914-1918 in the Red Cross Military Hospital under Col. Joseph Blake. On site, Pirie-Beyea, who often went by her nickname "Scotty" because of her Scottish background, endured daily bombings and was present during the "Big Bertha" bombings of Paris. She continued her work at two others stations following Paris: the Evacution Hospital No. 6 at Meaux, France and a hospital in St. Mihiel, France. Pirie-Beyea became known for her "courage and self-sacrifice in attending the sick and wounded during the raids". |
