Additional Research & Sources |
During the late 1800s, hand-powered wringer washers were the common type of washing machine used in households. Wanting to improve upon the model, W.H. George created two new versions called the Monarch and Billy Twister. The new model was built of wood slates held together by metal bands. The washers were sold country-wide for around $15 each. Dexter Laundry, the company started by George, continued to improve on their washers througout the early 1900s. The wooden washer eventually turned into a version made of zinc, copper and porcelain (picture provided). In 1908, Dexter Laundry relocated to Fairfield, Iowa where their business remains today. |
