Description |
This button displays the slogan "Black Power." The Black Power movement, which was popular in the 1960s and 1970s, emphasized racial pride and the promotion of the values and interests of African Americans. However, some people criticized the movement for alienating itself from the mainstream civil rights movement for its apparent support of racial segregation, and for constituting black superiority over other races. Additional Research & Sources |
Branching off of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and '70s, the Black Power Movement was led by leaders such as Malcolm X and Robert F. Williams, as well as the Black Panther Party who all fought for equal rights including protection against violence among African-Americans. The Black Power Movement consisted of a series of protests that were often more violent in nature, differing from MLK's more peaceful ways. Police violence was common as a result from the protests which pushed the Black Panther group to further fight for their rights. |
