Description |
Silhouette cut by Cedar Falls artist Marie Cook, of the Cedar Falls Civil War Soldier's Orphans Home, later called Central Hall when it became part of the Iowa State Normal School campus. |
Additional Research & Sources |
Marie Cook cut thousands of silhouettes of children, adults, houses, barns, businesses and more. Silhouette cutting is an art form that requires a steady hand, a strong sense of linear style and experience drawing faces. Multiple silhouettes can be cut at one time, and Marie typically cut from one to five copies at a sitting. Marie later became a teacher of silhouette cutting, and trained several silhouette artists. |
