Description |
This is a coin that was released in 1925 to commemorate the launch of the maritime vessel "Restauration", which set sail from Norway on July 4, 1825 and arrived in the United States three months later. The 52 passengers became the first of many Norwegians who would immigrate to the United States over the succeeding years. By 1925, more than 800,000 Norwegians had made a similar journey to America and had settled in states such as Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. In 1925, the Minnesota legislature voted to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Restauration's launch by minting a series of commemorative coins featuring Norse heritage symbols in a number of different metals, including bronze. The image on this particular item is of a Norwegian chieftain with drawn sword and horned helmet landing on Vinland in the year 1000 CE. On the rear face of the coin is an engraving of a Norse sailing ship with an inscription denoting that the coin was approved by the United States Congress. This content can be used with the following resources: SS-Gov.9-12.28: Iowa Issues and Policy This content can be used to educate students on the ways in which immigration to the United States and Iowa has changed throughout time.
