Additional Research & Sources |
Becoming popular as a sport during the Civil War, many veterans returned to their homes in Iowa and taught their neighbors the game of baseball which they learned from New York soldiers. As the game spread, baseball teams came to form and stadiums were built such as this one in Norway, Iowa. Hal Trosky, one of Norway's best players and first major-leaguer, was signed by the Cleveland Indians in 1933. With a baseballl career lasting 33 years, Hal became a nation favorite. His son also followed in his father's footsteps by joining a national team, the Chicago White Sox in 1958. Two more major leaguers followed, Bruce Kimm in 1976 and Mike Boddicker in 1980. Norway High School went on to win multiple state championships in baseball, resulting in the movie Final Season which was filmed in Norway and released in 2006. |
