This photograph, taken around 1945, shows Rabbi Zeichik of the Beth El Jacob Synagogue located in Des Moines, Iowa. This synagogue, built in 1895, was Des Moines's second Orthodox Jewish synagogue. Rabbi Zeichik served as the Rabbi for this synagogue for 43 years. The Beth El Jacob Synagogue become one of the only Orthodox Jewish church in Des Moines from its opening to its closure in 2016 (due to a decrease in congregation attendance). The church practiced sermons in typical Jewish Orthodox tradition. Men and women sat in separate sections of the sancutary with an opaque wall between them and followed a diet based on strictly kosher food. |
