Description |
This telegram informed Claube and Leora Wilson of Dexter, Iowa, that their son, Claiborne, had died in a training accident. All five of the Wilson's sons joined the military and served during World War II. Claiborne joined the U.S. Army Air Forces and trained as a fighter pilot. On August 9, 1945, the engine on Wilson's P-40 fighter aircraft exploded during training in Texas. Wilson lost his life in the explosion. The Wilson family of Dexter, Iowa had seven children- two girls and five boys to parents Claube and Leora Wilson. All five boys joined the military, the two oldest with the U.S. Navy and the three youngest with the U.S. Army Air Forces. The three brothers who served as pilots during WWII each lost their lives during the war. Dale R. Wilson (age 22) lost control of his B-25 bomber plane in the Pacific Theater of Operations near New Guinea. Daniel S. Wilson (age 21) and his P-38 plane were shot down in the European Theater of Operations over Austria. Claiborne D. "Junior" Wilson (age 20) and his P-40 Warhawk plane exploded during training exercises in Texas. |
