Description |
The Free Methodist Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa, was built in 1951. The Mount Ayr Free Methodists spent many years meeting in schools and other buildings, and this new church provided them a place to meet on their own. Content can be used with the following standards: 3rd grade SS 3.28 Cultural Contributions in a lesson on religious communities and town establishments in the early 1900s. The Free Methodist Church for several years held services in schoolhouses and members' homes before having their own church. In 1947, the construction of a new church began, with the project being completed on 1951 and a dedication ceremony taking place on May 20, 1951. Reverend Ward Campbell served the church for 20 years, beginning in 1954. In 1975, Reverend Leslie Sellers took over for Campbell and in 1980, Reverend Lewis Hunter served. |
