Additional Research & Sources |
Kanawha, Iowa was founded in 1899, with land owned under George C. Call and surveyed by C.B. Hutchins. The town was incorporated in 1902. Originally being named Luzon, the town name was changed after the postoffice found it too similar to the town of Luverne. The first business open in town was the C.S. Farman & Sons General Store in 1899. The store was followed by the opening of a livery, blacksmith, general and clothing store, hotel, skimming station and furniture store. The First National Bank of Kanawha opened in 1900 with J.E. Wichman as president. According to 1910 census, the town had a population of 400. |
