Additional Research & Sources |
Des Moines was founded by John Dougherty in 1834, when the area became a military post under the name Fort Des Moines (named after the nearby river). As pioneers settled near the post, a city began to grow. Fort Des Moines was incorporated as an official city on September 22, 1851. On October 25th of that year, Reverend Thompson Bird became the first president of the town council. In 1857, the name of the city shortened to Des Moines and became the state capitol. As the city expanded, the first city hall was built in 1870, which also housed the fire department and court house. In the 1900s, the city saw the development of paved roads and the establishment of Camp Dodge in 1917 to aid with war efforts. After the war period, the city appeared as a major business and political sector of the state and is recgonized as a world-known insurance center. |
