Additional Research & Sources |
The Lafayette Escadrille was a French Air Squadron consisting of American volunteers. America was not in the war until 1917, so some brave Americans volunteered to fight for France and England. This specific squadron became famous as the war progressed. These men who volunteered were seen as air "amateurs" at first, but began to show their skill in the air as the war went on. According to worldwar1centennial.org, the American volunteers shot down around 199 enemy planes.
