Maxen Electric Car; 1904; this car originally ran on battery power and advertised as being sold for $1450 in 1913; In 1904 in Cedar Rapids a man named Roy McCartney built an electric car he called the Maxen. It featured an underslung frame and a sloping Renault-type hood. He was able to complete three cars, one of which exists today. McCartney definitely planned on manufacturing more cars but could not secure funding at that time. In 1913, Maxen Motors Company of Cedar Rapids announced its intention to enter the automobile field for the production of this electric car and went so far as to have a product brochure printed. However this venture did not last and no additional cars were ever produced.
