Additional Research & Sources |
The Mount Ayr Cooperative Creamery was built in spring of 1914 and was open for business in June of that year. The company was managed by Mr. Pohl, with A.R. Shrimplin as book keeper. The first payment of the company was for butterfat, which went for around 23 cents. The company supplied the town with buttermilk, butter and ice cream during its operation. After WWI, many farmers were struggling with money and so turned elsewhere to sell their milk. The company was forced to close down in 1918. |
