Description |
This photograph of Ringgold County's first brick courthouse was taken around 1912. The courthouse was built in Mount Ayr between 1883 and 1884. The bell tower was located on the east side of the courthouse and was 102 feet tall. The tower also served as a fire alarm and curfew bell. Due to foundation settling and inferior building products, the courthouse was condemned in 1921 and demolished in 1922. Content can be used with the following standards: 8th grade SS 8.25 Iowa Government in a lesson on construction of government systems in Iowa. For any use other than instructional resources, please check with the organization that owns this item regarding copyright restrictions. |
Additional Research & Sources |
The first two courthouses of Mount Ayr were originally built of wood, but after natural disasters destroyed both buildings, a new brick and stone model was built in 1890 for $36,455. In 1921, the building was torn down and voters agreed to build a new courthouse in 1926. The three-story brick building cost $132,533 and follows a minimal Beaux-art and Neoclassical architectural style. |
