Additional Research & Sources |
In 1929, Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened the first Hy-Vee in Beaconsfield, Iowa. Both worked as managers of the General Supply Company of Lamboni and in 1923, the pair opened a branch of the store in Mount Ayr. At the time, the store also sold clothing and dry goods, but sooned sold those items to focus more on the grocery department. In March 1930, the store continued to upgrade with the purchase a refrigerated meat case. The name of the store was changed to Hyde's Food Supply, which then moved to Hy-Vee in 1952. The company soon opened multiple stores in Iowa and Missouri, and became known as the "employee-owned organization". Along with becoming a well-known Mid-West grocery store, the store also introduced shopping carts to its customers. People were hesitant to use them at first, as they reminded women of baby buggies and men saw them as an excuse not to carry heavy items. |
