Description |
Crinoids belong the phylum Echinodermata family. This is the same family star fish and sand dollars belong to, but crinoids are unique with their flower-like shape. Some are considered the sea lilies of the ocean floor due to the root-like parts that can grow to be meters long. Another name for crinoids are "feather stars." Feather Stars can move around due to small hook-like structures called cirri. Crinoids are the oldest known fossils, the earliest being from the Ordovician Period. Additional Research & Sources |
Crinoids are animals that look very similar to plants. Crinoids are members of the "phylum echinodermata". They lie on the ocean floor, and feed off of food particles and plankton by opening their "flower-like" stems and capturing their food. They were everywhere in the Paleozoic Era, but nearly became extinct in the Permian Period. Crinoids do move, but at an extremely slow rate. There are still a few crinoids around today, but many live too deep for divers to observe. Crinoids are the only "attached suspension-feeding" animals left in the world. The rest have gone extinct.
