Description |
Steam engines, as pictured, were used to power threshing machines in order to remove seeds from grain by beating the crop. A rubber belt would be connected from the wheel of the engine to the wheel of the threshing machine, transferring power to operate the threshing machine. Additional Research & Sources |
Threshing is the process of removing the grain from the stalk while separating out the seeds. While the process was orginally done by hand, the development of threshing machines in the mid-19th century made the process more efficient. Developed at the turn of the century, steam engines were used to power threshing machines whiched had previously been pulled by horses. The engine became a popular tool among farmers and an attraction to entertain others. The engines were powered by water and wood, but quickly ran out of energy due to its weight. The machines also tended to sink into wet ground which resulted in damaged soil. The machines were soon replaced by gasoline models. |
