Peter Melendy (February 9, 1823–October 18, 1901) –agriculturalist, writer, U.S. Marshal, and Cedar Falls mayor—was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the eldest son of James and Susan (Smith) Melendy. Instrumental in the development of Cedar Falls, Black Hawk Co., Iowa, the Cedar Falls Soldiers' Orphans Home, and what became Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa.
