Description |
This is an amber, one-quart sized glass milk bottle used and distributed by the Carnation Company out of Waterloo, Iowa. This particular bottle was produced circa 1961. The Carnation Company was started in Waterloo in 1929 and operated independently until it was sold to the Mississippi Valley Milk Producers' Association, Inc. in 1971. The name of the overall company would later change to the Swiss Valley Farms Co. The Carnation name would still be used on products until the Swiss Valley brand was phased out around 1978. The company stopped producing glass bottles of this kind in 1975. This content can be used with the following standards: SS-Econ.9-12.24: Iowa Economy Impact Upon SS 4.26: Changes to Agriculture The story of the Carnation Company can be used to educate students about how corporate entities are absorbed or acquired by other entities, such as was the case with the Mississippi Valley Milk Producers' Association, Inc. It can be used to also demonstrate how wider economic policy shaped the agricultural landscape of Iowa and shifted dependence on local producers to corporate producers.
