Description |
The railroad depot at Klemme, Iowa, was first constructed in 1890. By 1900, this depot was expanded and several new railroad tracks were built to accommodate the three to five freight trains that arrived each day. Content can be used with the following standards: 4th grade SS 4.25 Technological Changes in a lesson on the changing transportation in the early 1900s and the development of towns and railways in Iowa. Klemme, Iowa was founded in 1889 as part of the Ell Township near the Rock Island Railroad. The land was owned by Harmon J. and Effie M. Clemme, and the land was surveyed by C.S. Hall. One of the first businesses of the town was the general store of Schafer and Dow. The first bank of Klemme, the State Savings Bank opened in 1892 (the name was later changed to First National Bank) with W.R. Bloom as president. |
