Dark green cotton Explorer Scout long sleeve shirt, with collar and button front. Left shoulder patch "Cedar Falls Iowa 138". Right shoulder patch "Cedar Falls District". Two front button down pockets. Above the right pocket is a round patch " National Jamboree Valley Forge 1957 B. S. A. Onward For God and My Country". Embroidered above pocket in light brown is "Explorers B. S. A." Patches sewn on right pocket are "Camp Ingawanis", "Brave", "Sachem", and "Chief". There is a patch on the left pocket, a green square with a gold star edged in brown in the center with the Boy Scout trefoil inside the star. The Explorer Scout program began as a senior scouts program for young men over the age of fourteen. By 1935, the members of this separate program were officially referred to as Explorers, a designation which would expand to cover all scouts over the age of 14 by 1949. By the 1970's however, Exploring shifted its focus to educating and preparing members for potential carriers in the professional and trade fields. At this time, women of the same age were able to join as full members of the Explorers. This particular example displays two different forms of rankings. After 1959, scouts could be designated by bronze, silver, and gold awards. The use of "Brave", Sachem", and "Chief" are part of an older system which appropriated Native American terms.
