This chair was made by Judge L.D. Burns of Dallas County. In addition to making this chair by hand, Judge Burns also wrote a History of Dallas County in 1879. Content can be used with the following standards: 8th grade SS 8.25 Iowa Government in a lesson on town establishments in the late 1800s. Judge L.D. Burns was born in Clark County, Ohio in 1825. After spending several years in Indiana with his family, Burns moved to Illnois where he became involved in the milling business. In 1848, Burns setlled in Dallas County where he soon was elected as first county judge in August, 1851. The first business in court was a probate that appointed W. Miller guardianship of the children of the late Eli Smithson. Burns went on to write the "History of Dallas County" that records the significant events that occurred in Dallas County. |
