The Battle of Vicksburg was a crucial battle which was fought between Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The Battle of Vicksburg, also known as the Siege of Vicksburg or the Vicksburg Campaign, took place in the late spring and early summer of 1863. This battle was very bloody and ended up in a Union victory under General Ulysses S. Grant. The battle ended on the Fourth of July. Iowa regiments were involved in the Battle of Vicksburg. During this battle, Iowan troops fought against the Confederate forces and many died fighting. The other battle that took place during this time was the famous Battle of Gettysburg. No Iowa military regiment was involved in the Gettysburg Campaign due to the majority of Iowa regiments being sent to the Deep South, instead of the East Coast, to fight. This object connects to the following standard: Standard SS-US.9-12.2 Iowans Influence US History: A lesson could be created on the Battle of Vicksburg, specifically focusing on Iowa's involvement during the battle. |
