Description |
This drawing is an original ink and pen drawing that depicts four Cedar Falls Firemen saluting the fire chief. The cartoon drawing was commissioned from Herb Hake, a popular cartoon artist of Cedar Falls, for the Bicentennial Outlines of Cedar Falls book. Herbert Hake was born in Holyeton, Illinois in 1903. After graduating from Central Wesleyan College, he went to the University of Iowa to obtain a master’s degree. He then began to teach art and theatre, as well as being a commercial layout artist. In 1938, Herb Hake began to work at the Iowa State Teachers College (now called the University of Northern Iowa). He was a theatre scene designers and technical director. He then became the first radio program director, as well as radio and television director, at UNI. He is known for his "Landmarks in Iowa History". Not only was he a broadcaster, but he was also a cartoonist and local historian. Herb Hake passed away in 1980. He left behind a legacy at UNI, and was inducted into the Iowa Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1978. "The Cedar Falls Fire Department was established in 1867, following a serious fire at Hazlett’s Dry Goods Store on Main Street. Chronically short of equipment in the early days, the city slowly built the infrastructure and acquired the equipment needed to support the department. Buckets and ladders were replaced with a horse-drawn fire engine and hand-drawn hose carts. Cisterns were built at three locations to hold water for pump trucks: at 23rd and Campus, 8th and Franklin, and West 1st and Pearl. As the city expanded, the department replaced outdated equipment with larger, faster, and higher-reaching ladder trucks to better protect both businesses and citizens." -Julie Huffman-Klinkowiz, 2017. This object can connect to the following standard: Standard SS.3.28 Cultural Contributions: A lesson could be created on local artists, such as Herb Hake, and how they have contributed to Iowa's culture.
