Description |
This filling/service station was built on the south side of the Mount Ayr town square in 1920. In 1941, Mount Ayr residents Claude and Junior Moore rebuilt the station. Over the next few decades, the station sold Skelly Oil products. The Skelly Oil Company was formed in Oklahoma in 1919. The company sold products such as motor oil, motor fuels, and vehicle lubricants. The Mount Ayr Skelly station closed in the early 1980s. It has since been restored and now serves as a photo prop for local car shows. Content can be used with the following standards: 3rd grade SS 3.28 Cultural Contributions in a lesson on town expansion in the mid-1900s. Photographs of the station as it appeared during the 1960s are attached.
