Description |
During the late 1800s, "cooling" tables such as this were used to embalm the bodies of deceased people in their own homes. The wood framed wicker cooling table allowed air to reach the underside of the body. It also folded in half for easy transport with a carrying handle. Content can be used with the following standards: 4th grade SS 4.25 Technological Changes in a lesson on medical advances of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Embalming Burial Case Company of Burlington was established in 1876 by Dr H.B. Bailey. After his death, Ulrich Ita, an immigrant from Stanheim, Switzerland took his position as president. His son, Arnold C. Ita worked as treasurer and manager and continued to run the business after his father's death. |
