Additional Research & Sources |
Prior to first settlement in Hancock County in 1854, the area was referred to as "no man's land" as it served as a neutral space created by the government between the Sioux and Winnebago Native Americans. While the tribes were free to hunt in the area, neither group was allowed to set up homes or take part in war activites on the land. Due to new economic possibilties and the promise of exciting adventure, pioneers began to travel West and settled in areas such as Hancock. The first family to settle in the area was that of Mr. and Mrs. Anson and Lavina Avery on September 4th, 1854 (the couple later had the first child to be born in the county as well, George Avery in January of 1855). After the construction of the Klondike and Minneapolis & St. Louis Railways, multiple towns were established as stopping points along the way. By 1896, the county had 16 townships and 11 towns/villages. Townships: Amsterdam, Avery, Bingham, Britt, Boone, Concord, Crystal, Ell, Ellington, Erin, Garfield, Garner, Magor, Madison, Orthel, and Twin Lake. Towns/Villages: Amsterdam, Britt, Corwith, Garner, Concord, Goodell, Hayfield, Hutchins, Klemme, Miller and Stilson. |
