In 1840, Thomas Mitchell arrived in what would become Polk County as the first settler. The area was under control of Fort Des Moines, and Mitchell recieved permisison from Captain Allen to cultivate the land and make a home there. Over time, travellers began to stop at his home for rest and the Mitchells converted the place into a tavern. After the military fort closed, counties began to form along the Mississippi River. In January of 1846, Polk county was established, and a voting place was set up in Mitchell's home, wherein he was voted in as town sheriff. The town saw more people moving to the area over the new few decades, and by 1860, had a population of 11,625. In 1870, the state capitol moved to Des Moines in Polk County and has resided there since. In total, Polk County has 20 cities, listed with incorporation dates as follows: Alleman (1973), Altoona (1876), Ankeny (1903), Bondurant (1897) , Carlisle (1851) , Clive (1956), Des Moines (1851) , Elkhart (1904), Granger (1885), Grimes (1894), Johnston (1969), Mitchellville (1875), Norwalk (1900), Pleasant Hill (1956), Polk City (1875), Runnells (1903), Sheldahl (1882) Urbandale (1917), West Des Moines (1893) and Windsor Heights (1941). |
