Additional Research & Sources |
In 1866, the GAF or Grand Army of the Republic was created as a veterans organization. Years later in 1881, the GAF sponsored Sons of Veterans Camps so their sons and grandsons could carry on the veterans memories. In 1925, the name was officially changed to Sons of Veterans of the Civil War. The GAR also helped establish the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War branch. Today the Sons of Veterans has 11 camps across Iowa dedicated to carry on the veterans legacies. |
