This photograph shows the Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy Railroad depot in Kellerton, Iowa, as it appeared around 1910. Kellerton, named after Ringgold County judge Isaac W. Keller, was the first town in Ringgold County to get the railroad when the Leon, Mount Ayr & Southern Railroad built a line from Leon, Iowa, to Mount Ayr in 1879. The depot burned down on August 15, 1934. The town of Kellerton was established in 1881 and became the first Iowa town to be built by a railroad company. The town was named after Judge Issac W. Keller, who was a resident of the county. The first train came through the town on September 22, 1879, with J. Perry Wiley as the first agent of th eKellerton train depot. The town soon grew in size, as businesses emerged and residents moved in from surrounding cities. The town soon opened two banks as well as a brick and tile company, bringing new jobs to the area. |
