Description |
Sea Explorer Scout uniform shirt made of black wool. Shirt is long sleeved with a sailor's collar edged in two rows of white twill and twill around sleeve cuffs. "Sea Explorers B. S. A." embroidered on front right chest; anchor over two bars embroidered in white on left front pocket, above which are four circular pins, "Cedar Falls Iowa 138" troop badges on left shoulder; on right shoulder is a patch "Cedar Falls District". Flat cloth bar to hold scarf in place in front (scarf is missing). Shirt is 23 inches long from shoulder to hem. Founded in 1912 by Arthur A. Carey, Sea Scouting in America sought to teach young boys the art of sailing from an early age. The distinctive sailor uniform, adopted in 1922 as a result of Commander Thomas J. Keane's influence, helped to distinguish the Sea Scouts from the larger Boy Scouts of America organization. This uniform was issued after September 1, 1949, when the Sea Scouts were renamed as the Sea Explorers.
