Description |
This peddler's wagon was owned by A.J. Elias. Mr. Elias provided services for numerous customers in the Monona, Shelby and Pottawattamie areas for 55 years. During this time, Elias helped to bring crucial supplies to rural farm families during the harsh winter months. In this picture is the back of the Elias's wagon. Object Importance: This wagon was significant to Harrison County because for many rural families, this was a life saver when winter came. During the winter months, rural farm families had to stock up on supplies that they could only get in town. If a storm went through, many rural farm families would be left stranded at their farms for days due to the heavy snow fall and the inability to travel. Mr. Elias and his wagon helped many families during these winter months. Without his assistance, families would have had to make the journey into town in freezing cold weather to obtain supplies. This would have been very dangerous in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. |
