Lt. Hibbs and his men were on a patrol when they spotted Viet Cong soldiers. They attacked the VC forces with antipersonnel mines, grenades, and machine gun fire. One of his men was wounded during the attack and now wondering alone. Even though Lt. Hibbs had been wounded himself, he and another soldier volunteered to rescue the fellow soldier. After the man was rescued, Lt. Hibbs stayed back and provided covering fire until he was mortally wounded. He eventually died while providing covering fire for his men. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls, Iowa. (uni.edu) |
